Maikel Holger Schmaelingread bio
Born in Germany, Maikel H. Schmaeling studied Philosophy, Ancient Greek, History, and Art History at Freie Universitaet Berlin, National University of Singapore, and University College London. In 2017 Maikel participated in an excursion on “Law, Justice, and Society in the People's Republic of China” in Beijing, where he had been carrying out research on “Sustainability in the Light of 体 and 用” as visiting scholar at Peking University before. Currently, he is setting up a Philosophical Consultancy. At Yenching Academy, Maikel focuses on Politics and International Relations, but also aspires to deepen his insights into Chinese Philosophy as well as getting hands-on experience of venturing into China. Having led a chess tournament team in the past, Maikel hopes to improve his wéiqí while being back in Beijing.
Michal Tkoczread bio
Originally from Poland, Michal Tkocz completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Cambridge in Land Economy, an interdisciplinary combination of Economics, Law, and Finance. At the Yenching Academy, Michal will be studying his core competencies within a Chinese economy context as part of the Economics and Management Master's degree concentration. After graduation, he intends to work in management consulting. Michal has a keen interest in East Asian languages and cultures. Prior to Yenching, he received the Tsuzuki Scholarship, an intensively immersive Japanese language and society programme awarded annually to ten Oxbridge graduates. Besides furthering his knowledge of Mandarin and his academic research experience, Michal hopes to involve himself in Beijing's jazz scene.
